A recent article on mHealthnews.com comes on the tail of the American Medical Association’s classification of obesity as a disease earlier this year. It would seem that deeming obesity a disease would make it easy for healthcare providers to treat it as such, with medical interventions such as diet and exercise regimens and medication. However, our own research suggests it’s not such a simple fix. According to our Healthy World Report “The Obesity Epidemic: Unhealthy Habits Result in a Growing Problem for Americans”, while 78 percent of Americans surveyed said they could benefit from losing weight right now, and 90 percent of Americans – and 97 percent of healthcare providers – agree that diet and exercise can be used effectively against obesity, only 37 percent have reported successfully losing any weight.
